Nice write up/guide sam!

may i suggest adding a part about having/using scouts, even if you have the other FC telling you what they have? The use of scouts can really save alot of drama since you always know what you're getting into. It not even a matter of trusting the other FC or not, we all know that when you're herding cats, talking with 5+ people at once in chats/comms, maneuvering the fleet, ect.. keeping track of whats in your fleet is sometimes a challenge so having scouts watching both sides not only gives you the chance to tell your counterpart about his over/under shipping but, what i think is the simplest option is, it gives you the chance to match the other fleet without even having to talk about it, which saves time and tears. :)

Apart from a very small number of Command who are focused on moderating this forum and managing our in-game logistics all members of command are FC's. When we look to promote new people to command we look at fleet commanders.

Of course some of the older members of command don't often have the time to FC regularly and are mainly focused on our admin burden but they will have only got there in the first place because they were spotted as a good leader. Fleet Commanding regularly is your first step to potentially joining command =)

The
objective of a Fleet Commander in RvB is NOT to win fights. RvB FC's
are there to help create balanced, fair and fun fights with as little
drama as possible. Forget everything you learnt about Fleet Commanding
in 0.0/low sec because here: Winning is NOT IMPORTANT.

This, so much this.  If you say you have a 7 member fleet in dessie down and show up in a 15 cruiser heavy fleet and crush the other side... sure you win.  But then the other side gets mad and doesn't want to fight anymore - so you won the engagement, but you just lost the game.  Bravo.

It's impossible to have a perfectly even fight every time, but it is quite doable to be roughly fair.   And think about it - the *best fight* are the fights that were very tight!   I remember a while ago we had an aproximately 10 vs 10 fight, no reship.  We won with two man standing (I was the last red to go down).  It was fantastic.  You can't have that kind of fight without trying to be fair - and after a fight like this people want to do it again! and again!

Being a good FC in RvB is 75% having the right attitude.  Thank you Samuel for posting this.

I'll share a tip I use. Have one overview tab that shows only the enemy fleet, and another which shows only your fleet. It's very easy to flick between the 2 tabs, to assess how the fight is going. You can also use it to assess numbers before the fight.

It's a bit more problematic if you have mixed red and blue fleets, due to the fact that the overview filters suck ass. In that case I have a tab that shows non-fleet members for fighting, and another that shows all pilots on grid for assessing my fleet. Make sure purple is set as the highest priority background colour on the overview settings.

Nice to find this, was a nice read, and I wanted to say what a nice job you did here.

PS I was looking for the overview settings you use to be able to download. I had them last time I joined RvB and had to reinstall my computer and was hoping they were still around.

If in a small fleet (10 or below) you can also put everyone on your watchlist (the more there are the more impractical this is getting).

Not only no need to switch overview tabs but it will also tell you if everyone is on grid, what the general state of the your fleetmembers is (showing their ships shield, armor and hull) and who is currently being shot.

It works regardless of corp affiliation.

You can have 15 on watch list now, only snag is if u don't see ship being damaged on watch list the once person in a pod it looks same. Beads need to warp pods off grid!

Someone needs to amend the original post to delete Sam from the list of contacts, or maybe leave him on so lots of new FCs keep convoying him
