I seem to get the same questions every few days/weeks in regards to tech problems . A lot of these questions can be answered with a simple copy and paste of a link .

Like the follow

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/CPU/2

Use these Sites bench/review page you can compare Video cards, CPUS, Smart phones and mobile devices . This site is always a bit Intel/Nvida Bias but still works for a reference points.

http://portforward.com/

Pro tip ... i suck at port forwarding, the Above website rocks, IT will walk you though step by step how to set up a port-forward with a certain model Router/modem and program.

http://isitup.org/
http://www.downforev...neorjustme.com/

Both of these are great to check other sites, i have both bookmarked .. the irony of using one to check the other is interesting .

http://www.microsoft...ance/speed.aspx

Defrag and disk clean your HDD .... DO IT ... well unless you have an SSD then Don't :)

http://event.msi.com...er/download.htm

Even if you don't have a MSI card this is a good program for monitoring VGA heat and managing Fan speed.

http://www.passmark....roducts/bit.htm
Use the trial version of this to help isolate problems , Not the best program but easy to use . When you use it just test 3D, 2D, CPU and RAM . They are the most common problems .

http://www.avast.com/en-au/index
free good Anti virus .... please stop paying for norton failware

http://www.seagate.c...loads/seatools/

Testing a HDD every few months is a good idea ... losing data sucks

http://www.memtest.org/

For testing ram (duh) , Faulty ram causes so many interesting faults. This has to be run from a DOS level, read the instructions it isn't hard.

These are a few of the ones i have bookmarked for fast reference .

My last thing for now .

those Websites/Programs that claim to scan your computer and download the drivers you need.

DON'T TOUCH THEM, DON'T CLICK THEM, HELL DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT .

Almost everyone you see is malaware, they are there purely to spy on you and touch you in your naughty places. if you need to update your drivers do it manually it isn't hard.

Serious Don't do it

- i have probably missed some good ones, like madshrimps comes to mind for good reviews. If you think of something add it below

From Captain Hurrdurr

Some useful programs I use that I can add:

http://ninite.com/ - Automatically installs and downloads selected programs. (Good for when you get a new PC and need to download a bunch of new programs.)

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner - Cleans all your shit.

http://www.piriform.com/defraggler - Defrags.

http://www.safer-networking.org/dl/ - Spybot Search & Destroy, cleans more shit.

http://www.cpuid.com...ares/cpu-z.html - CPUz. Benchmark tool.

if I think of anything else to add, I'll post.

ITT: Galen finally gets sick of handing out what is probably fairly expensive (in a consultatory sense) advice :P.

Think it is worth adding in a link on how to slipstream stuff into a windows installer.... or is that just opening up a world of hurt you think ?

Absolutely helpful webpage to help improve your online security:

http://www.lastpass.com/

An online password storage service. I've been using it for over a year now, for free, and it's been great. I don't have to remember passwords (except for one), anymore. It's always said that the most secure password is the one you don't remember. Being able to randomly generate 20-character passwords (upper/lower case, numbers, symbols) and store them securely means I don't use the same password for multiple sites (obviously a security risk), and that every one is not likely to be easily guessed. (They also have mobile phone apps, but those cost actual money.)

There are similar services out there, of which I have heard mixed reviews, so I won't comment on them. I've used Lastpass for over a year, and it's great.

Vouch for ninite, very useful indeed.

Teamviewer is a much better remote/assistance tool compared to logmein imo…i use it frequently and am even able to get past the great firewall of china with it.

I Would also suggest Tom's CPU/GPU/SSD/etc for the money monthly updates when considering upgrades. Anandtech defintely has more accurate and technical articles but for the peeps that dont get massive hard ons from looking at benchmark results, these monthly updates+hierchy charts are way more efficient when considering upgrades.

Finally, people can also get in touch with me for IT stuff as I work in that field as well...I'm also a poor man's enthusiast who runs low to mid range boxes with massive overclocks so if you run relatively dated hardware i might be able to give you some tips and reasonable purchase opinions.
