Mods can i haz sticky please.

IMPORTANT NOTE(s): Please dont use 'Spaces' in your username, though the server supports it your client may not. Please do NOT create multiple logins, make sure you use the reasource setting to allow you to log in multiple times on the same user. You can also create users with @ in the name.... dont do it... please it will make me cry.

Have you ever missed out on a purple op before because you are terrible at reading forums? Have you ever wanted to find out there are fleets up and running but you are logged into another character? Have you ever been a terrible spai and wanted to try and make your life easier so you can see what fleets we have up?

Well fret no more, because now we have the RvB Jabber experiment.

In the first stage i'm using an old server in one of our data centres to host this service however if it proves popular we'll migrate this to a paid for server with a proper URL etc. I say we... i mean i will fund this.

So what is Jabber?
Jabber is the original open instant messaging (IM) technology, invented by Jeremie Miller in 1998 and formalized as the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) by the IETF as an Internet Standard for IM and presence.

Ok, i still have no idea what your talking about...
Jabber is a chat protocol. You use it to talk with other people using the internet.

Right, so what does it do for me?
It gives you an out of game connection so you can see when we 'ping' for purple ops, when we're forming ad-hoc ganked fleets and so we can let you know about what is happening in RvB

Ok, i'm sold how do it get an account?
You can create an account using any full-featured IM client, such as Adium, Gajim, Pidgin, or Psi. The server is 89.213.24.150, so you can register with a name like joe_bloggs@89.213.24.150. If you are really stuck instructions on creating accounts in these programs are below...

I think those suck / i dont want to use those but my other client doesn support registration, what do i do
I think that you are terrible and fail at every level, however as not all clients allow you to register a new login on the fly so i have enabled web registration, simply go to:

Now, if you feel the need to be a script kiddie and try and hack they system i will ban your ip, and burn down your house so please dont try.

I'm terrible at picking password etc. how do i change mine?
You can change your password using any full-featured IM client, such as Adium, Gajim, Pidgin, or Psi.

In Adium, log in, go to the File menu, scroll down to "Disconnect" and you will see a list of actions you can perform. Choose "Change Password". A new window will appear. Enter your preferred password and click "OK".

In Gajim, go to "Accounts" (through "Edit" menu), choose your account, expand "Administration operations" on "Account" tab, click "Change Password", type a new password twice, and click "OK".

In Pidgin, go to "Accounts", select your account, and choose "Change Password..."

In Psi, go to "Account Setup", choose your account, click "Modify", type a new password, and click "Change..."

I get a certificate warning. What can I do?
Ignore it, if you are really paranoid then you can check the fingerprint which should be the same as this image: http://i.imgur.com/UaRkzfk.png

Ok, so thats cool i can see the value in that but i dont have jabber already... how do i get it?

Ignoring the fact you are probably a terrible spai, and already have jabber you can use any jabber client, however these are the ones i have put instructions for on this post:

Spark:
Spark can be downloaded from the following location: http://www.igniterea...index.jsp#spark

Pidgin:
Pidgin can be downloaded from the following location: http://sourceforge.n...ad?source=files

Trillian:
Trillian can be downloaded from the following location: https://www.trillian.im/download/

Gajim:
Gajim can be downloaded from the following location: http://gajim.org/downloads.php

Instructions on configuring clients etc. can be found in the following posts..

Once you are in, if you are not automatically joined to the rvb_general chat, please feel free to join, Other options include rvb_ganked and some super secret ones for command etc. <shhhhhhh>

Setting up your clients:

Pidgin

  • Open Pidgin: Double click on the pidgin icon on your desktop or open Start/Programs/Startup and double click on Pidgin.

  • Open Accounts/Manage Accounts.  The Manage Account Window is visible.

  • Click Add...

Then set up an account with the following settings:
  • Protocol: XMPP

  • Username: <either the one you registered with, or your desired username>

  • Domain: 89.213.24.150

  • Password: <your password you registered with or desired password>

  • Local alias: optional

You may want to tick remember password

There is no need to tick the following tickboxes: Resources: New mail notifications.

If your account is not already created please tick: Create this new Account on Server

Unfortunately you will then need to complete another page of the same information to add the user to XMPP

you should get a success message: http://i.imgur.com/UaXrAFE.png

Finally accept the certificate for 89.213.24.150

Gajim

Once Gajim is launched :

To add an existing one:

  • Choose Accounts in the Edit menu.
  • Click on the Add button.
  • Select "I already have an account".
  • Choose your server (89.213.24.150)
  • Enter your pseudo and choose a password for your account.
  • Click on the Finish button.
  • Now you are online !

Troubleshooting / FAQ:

Q.    I just created an account (for example joe bloggs) and whenever i try and log in i get access denied. What gives?

A.    Assuming you are typing in the right password its likely your client doesn support 'spaces' in the username. Create a new user without them

Q.    Ive joined the server but all i see is rvbchat... now what?

A.    Join the chat's rvb_general and rvb_ganked, how you do this is client dependant but will be something like join conference or join room.

open chat, we have other ways of doing pings for different ops. I want to see how it goes and open chat is most likely to get adoption

Specifically i can put people into groups manually until i have written a mod to update access based on their corp, which is not that difficult it looks like

Same in my other clients too.

I couldn't get IM+ to join the chat rooms but you will still get the pings for sure.

So, things learnt:

Don't register your name as whatever@theipadddress, and then give the domain as theipaddress, because you still get that error about invalid xmpp id. Because it tries whatever@theipadddress@theipadddress

Pidgin has a (6 year old?!) bug where it puts the Buddy List/main window off-screen if you have multiple monitors (of differing resolutions). https://developer.pi....im/ticket/3850

Win7 doesn't have the easier Taskbar Move option to fix this. http://social.techne...ffscreen-window

Did I need to give a (valid) email address when registering? ATM I'm Not Authorized and assume this is why...
